Are Hiking Sandals For You?

Sandals are a very versatile type of footwear and are by far the most comfortable to be worn in warmer weather. These days, rather than just filling the function of shoes that allow breathability, there are so many different types of sandals that you can wear them around the house, while engaging in summer activities, right up to a formal night out or even on your wedding day (if you’re a woman!)

Everyone has their favorite kind of sandal. Some people love to wear a pair of Crocs or other type of clog that is easy to slide on and off. Some prefer flip flops or slide sandals for serious convenience and comfort and others want a sandal with a bit more coverage and stability.

Speaking of coverage and stability, hiking sandals are the kind of sandals that will provide the highest level of each. Hiking sandals are designed for the purpose suggested in their name: hiking. Any serious hiker is well aware that what you have on your feet is very important to your comfort and performance on a hike. Hiking sandals provide another option besides large and heavy hiking boots.

The basic design of hiking sandals is a combination of a boot and a sandal. The shoe typically covers most of the foot, right up over the ankle for added support and stability in hiking up rocky and uneven trails. They are made of sturdy materials and have a very non-slick sole with excellent traction to prevent slips or falls.

The top of the sandal is made of thick, good quality, thick leather that is sturdy enough to keep your foot well in place no matter how steep or uneven the terrain you are hiking on. At the same time, there are holes to allow for significantly more breathability than you get from a hiking shoe. In the summer this is so much more comfortable than hiking with your feet sweating and slippery in your shoes.

One thing to keep in mind about hiking sandals is that they are best worn while hiking! If you wear them around town, it looks like you are wearing boots with holes in them and they just don’t look right. Also, wearing sandals and socks is generally frowned upon and hiking sandals are usually worn with socks. The squirrels and rabbits don’t care how your feet look, but the general public might, so wear your hiking sandals accordingly.

For everyday wear hiking sandals should probably not be a top choice. However, for those who spend a lot of time walking or hiking in the mountains and especially in the summer weather it is a great idea to have a pair to wear for greater comfort while hiking.
